Born in 1916, founder Anthony J. Thomas Sr. was still a young boy when his father moved his family to the United States in 1924. They arrived with no money or possessions – they had only a strong work ethic and the lure of The American Dream. Seven years later at the age of fourteen, Tony dropped out of school and took odd jobs to support the family after his father became ill.
By 1946 Tony had saved enough money to open his own business, A. Thomas Meat Market. It was a small storefront meat market in the Haymarket district of Louisville, Kentucky.
Three generations later, A. Thomas Foodservice has operated with the same ethics, pride and self-imposed demand for product excellence and customer satisfaction that their reputation was built on. They have expanded to an 82,000 sq. ft. federally inspected meat production and distribution facility.
Robert Kerker Mattingly was born in Zanesville, Ohio in 1921. As he graduated from St. Thomas High School in Zanesville, OH, World War II was looming, and like many young men his age, duty called and he answered. At the end of his service, Bob was able to return home to Zanesville with his wife Bette.
No stranger to hard work, Bob worked at his father's dairy route, and spent his "off" hours doing odd jobs. On the weekends Bob and Bette would load the trunk of the car with pottery (Zanesville was then quite a pottery center), and drive to bigger cities like Columbus and Indianapolis where they would resell the pottery out of the trunk of their car. As hindsight would prove, they were learning valuable lessons of Purchase and Delivery.
This venture added valuable Purchase and Delivery experience to Bob’s already impressive business savvy. In 1947, Bob and Bette purchased a seafood market in downtown Zanesville. A few years later he invested in a frozen locker and began selling frozen food to the budding restaurant market in Zanesville. Mattingly Seafood and Frozen Food was born. In 1965 the company incorporated and the following year moved to its current location at 302 State. Since then, it expanded the site to over 240,000 square feet of quality frozen foods.

On December 10th, 2008 Mattingly Foods purchased A. Thomas Foodservice, and Mattingly Foods of Louisville L.L.C. was born. These two companies have had much in common: A strong sense of family, a focus on thrift, and a resilient entrepreneurial spirit. Each business brings a wealth of expertise and a strong local reputation to this new venture.
